When Amy DePriest, ACME’s Business Support Manager, first joined the  National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) ten years ago, she wanted to learn, connect, and help create more opportunities for women in an industry where they’re still vastly outnumbered. Over the past decade, Amy has attended conferences across the Midwest to meet other members and learn the ins and outs of how this professional organization operates. But Amy's true impact came through her work hosting and coordinating events that raised significant funds for various charities, as well as for construction-related awareness and scholarships within the St. Louis community. She led efforts for events such as the Dignity Drive, Pumpkins and Power Tools, and the chapter's annual golf tournament. The NAWIC St. Louis Annual Golf Tournament raises funds that go directly toward scholarships for local schools offering construction programs, creating pathways for the next generation of construction professionals. ACME has always been a top supporter.
Beyond NAWIC, Amy took on the role of Women Build chair for Habitat for Humanity, where she has played a pivotal role in organizing the Chapter’s 38’s Women Build group, Caped Constructors.. She has stayed involved with getting more women involved with supporting Habitat's mission with building affordable housing all while picking up a hammer and getting involved with the physical labor of construction.didn't just coordinate these efforts, she actively promoted NAWIC to everyone involved, expanding the organization's reach and impact.
Whether leading an event or mentoring others, Amy approached every role with the same professionalism she brings to her work at ACME. Over time, her leadership, dependability, and quiet persistence became a cornerstone of her chapter’s success. That’s why, this year, Amy was named NAWIC Member of the Year—a recognition not just of one moment, but of a decade of showing up, following through, and helping others find their place in the construction industry.
The Mission: Opening Doors and Changing Perceptions
Amy's initial involvement was driven by a desire to connect with other women in a historically male-dominated field. She quickly learned that NAWIC's purpose extends far beyond networking. The core mission of the organization is to strengthen and amplify the success of women in the construction industry. By serving on various committees and attending regional conferences, she has witnessed firsthand how NAWIC's resources and shared experiences break down barriers.
A major focus has been changing the perception of construction. It's not just hard hats and heavy lifting—it's leadership, technology, finance, project management, and sustainability.
A Culture of Generosity: Giving Back to the Community
The spirit of generosity within NAWIC is one of its most compelling attributes. This is not just an association that provides professional resources for its members; it is an organization deeply committed to community service.
The chapter's fundraising efforts directly translate into tangible support for those pursuing construction careers:
Scholarships: NAWIC actively raises funds to provide scholarships for both men and women enrolled in construction-related programs at local colleges. This direct financial aid is crucial for cultivating future industry talent.
Charitable events: The chapter regularly channels energy and funds toward causes that support the community. In recent years, members have successfully hosted a Dignity Drive, raised essential funds for the Alzheimer's Association, and supported the impactful work of the Little Bit Foundation.
Amy is currently serving as the Women Build Team Chair for Habitat for Humanity. This role perfectly encapsulates NAWIC's mission: it's hands-on, deeply impactful, and demonstrates that the organization is actively building better communities, not just better buildings.
The Power of Partnership
At ACME Constructors, we recognize that the success of our employees is intrinsically linked to their ability to pursue passion projects and community service. We are 100% supportive of Amy’s involvement with NAWIC, viewing her work as an extension of our company's commitment to industry growth and social responsibility. Four of our team members currently have company-sponsored NAWIC memberships. This ongoing investment reflects our employee ownership structure, where growing our people means growing our company.Â
These efforts create vital connections, allowing us to share our experience, goals, and interests to grow the foundation of opportunities for all those interested in joining the field.
The Reward: Connection, Growth, and Recognition
All of this effort, the committee meetings, the fundraising drives, the long hours at conferences, is driven by a desire to connect people who share the same interests, goals, and experiences. NAWIC provides the foundation for this growth, creating a space where mentorship flourishes and professional development is a priority.
Being recognized as Member of the Year is a profound honor for Amy. It is a testament not only to her dedication but to the collective effort of every woman in the chapter and the supportive partnership of ACME. This award is a milestone, but the true achievement is knowing that NAWIC members are actively helping the next generation understand that the sky is the limit in construction.
Moving forward, Amy remains committed to NAWIC's mission, continuing to advocate for women and youth, and helping to build an industry that is accessible, inclusive, and rewarding for all.
